چکیده

The abundances of cosmic-ray helium isotopes between 0.2 and 3.7 GeV nucleon~1 were measured by the Isotope Matter Antimatter Experiment (IMAX) during a Ñight from Lynn Lake, Manitoba, Canada on 1992 July 16È17. The IMAX balloon-borne magnetic spectrometer realized a direct measurement of the charge, the velocity, and the rigidity of cosmic rays using plastic scintillators, a high-resolution timeof-Ñight system, and two silica-aerogel Cerenkov counters in conjunction with a drift chamber/multiwire proportional chamber tracking system. About 75,000 helium isotopes are identiÐed by their mass using the velocity versus magnetic rigidity technique. The measured 3He/4He ratios are corrected to the top of the atmosphere, and a comparison with previous data is given. The observed isotopic composition is found to be generally consistent with the predictions of a standard leaky box model of cosmic-ray transport in the Galaxy. The Isotopic Composition of Hydrogen and Helium

The isotopes 2H and 3He have been identified in low-energy cosmic rays during solar-quiet periods from 1973 January to 1974 October. These observations, made with the Caltech Electron/ Isotope Spectrometer on IMP-7, cover the energy intervals 5-29 MeV per nucleon for 2H and 7-50 MeV per nucleon for 3He. We find that the energy spectra oflH, 2H, and 3He all fall rapidly with decreasing energy, g...

The Isotopic Composition of the Anomalous Low-energy Cosmic Rays

We present new observations of the isotopic composition of low-energy He, C, N, 0, and Ne nuclei. The observations cover the energy interval from ,...., 5 to 30 MeV per nucleon, the energy range where the "anomalous cosmic ray" fluxes of He, N, 0, and Ne have been observed. We compare the isotopic composition of the anomalous cosmic rays with that of higher-energy galactic cosmic rays in an eff...

Galactic propagation of cosmic ray nuclei in a model with an increasing diffusion coefficient at low rigidities: A comparison of the new interstellar spectra with Voyager data in the outer heliosphere

[1] Using both a Monte Carlo Diffusion Model and a Leaky Box Model for propagation in the galaxy, we have determined the interstellar spectra of H, He, and heavier nuclei with emphasis on energies below 1–2 GeV nucleon . This calculation uses diffusion coefficients that are increasing at rigidities below 2–3 GVand which are based on those used to fit the interstellar electron spectrum to the ga...

Evidence That the Anomalous Cosmic-ray Component Is Singly Ionized

We have used data from the Cosmic Ray Subsystem on the Voyager spacecraft to measure the spectra of He, C, N, 0, and Ne with 4-124 MeV per nucleon (for 0) during solar minimum conditions near the end of 1977. By subtracting both a low-energy interplanetary component and the high-energy galactic component we have determined the energy spectra of the "anomalous" cosmic-ray species He, N, 0, and N...
